05.10.07 - Travelling to transition
|
|
Another step
forward to creating the Academy has been
taken over the last few weeks.
Prospective students and parents have been
able to attend open evenings at Hartshead
Sports College and Stamford Community High
School. Both schools will close next August,
but the sites will be used for two years
before the new £38million campus opens for
admissions in September 2010.
Meetings took place this week at Hartshead
and Stamford for current parents and
students.
Under the Academy, the Stamford site will be
known as the Silver Springs campus. The
whole of the year 7 intake (first year) will
learn at Silver Springs before the September
2010 move to the new buildings. Existing
year 9 students at Stamford will move next
year to be taught at the Academy’s Greenhurst campus.
George Lloyd, Executive Director said: “I’ve
been keen to listen to parents’ aspirations
and concerns about making the transition to
the Academy a resounding success.
“We have a full programme of exciting
transition activities planned over the next
eight months, involving other agencies and
support groups. An early transition activity
will be for the Student Councils from both
schools to visit another Academy which
opened just three weeks ago. Students will
see at first hand what a marvellous learning
experience their Academy will offer. But I
have also offered individual meetings with
parents who expressed an interest at the
Silver Springs campus meeting.”
One concern raised had been forecast - the
travelling involved for the years affected
by the transition. But there was good news
on this front. The Academy will provide
transport between the two sites at the start
and finish of each school day for the
convenience of parents and students.

The prospectus is aimed at parents of year 6 in primary schools, children who will provide our first Year 7 intake in September 2008. But we also intend it to be a useful guide for parents of students currently attending Hartshead and Stamford schools.
The prospectus sets out our vision and values, details the Academy working day, and tries to anticipate the questions which parents - and students - may ask. Admissions arrangements are included, although residents of Tameside should apply on the Common Application Forms sent by the Council to all parents of year 6 children this month. Parents may also apply online through the Council's website at

25.04.07 - New Principal Appointed
New
Charter is delighted to announce George Lloyd has
been appointed Principal of the New Charter Academy.
Mr Lloyd started his career locally in Manchester,
and is currently Headteacher of Bishop Rawstorne
Language College in Lancashire. As a Leading Edge
School, it also supports other secondary schools in
Lancashire in their efforts to raise standards of
student attainment.
He has spent over thirty years working in schools in
Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
Mr Lloyd trained Headteachers for several years
working with the Centre of Educational Leadership
based at the University of Manchester, and has
worked part-time for Ofsted since 1993 inspecting
schools in the North West.
Academies nationally have attracted some of the most
capable principals with great vision and leadership.
Mr Lloyd said: “I don’t believe in super
headteachers! But I will be passionate about
creating super teams of teachers, parents and
students. I want my team to excel by working closely
with the community, New Charter and the Local
Authority to create a new school with the highest
ambitions and achievement.”
The New Charter Academy in Ashton-under-Lyne will
bring together Hartshead Sports College and Stamford
Community High School. It will open in September
2008, initially on the two existing sites.
Mr Lloyd stressed that much planning still has to be
done. He is committed to ensuring quality education
provision for every student during the transition.
“I am particularly concerned to ensure the
transition is smooth, especially for students
involved in examination years. Staff, too, will be a
priority as the new Academy gears up. The goal is to
capture the overwhelming support of the community to
create an Academy where everyone achieves more than
they thought possible.”
Mr Lloyd is married with two children. He is
delighted to be working in Ashton-under-Lyne, and
sees his appointment to create an outstanding
Academy that will transform the opportunities for
young people in the area. Mr Lloyd believes the
special focus on Sport, with Business and Enterprise
as a second specialism will help motivate students
and raise standards of student attainment. He is
excited by the challenge and the opportunities the
Academy will present for the community in Ashton. He
quoted a favourite African proverb, ‘it takes a
whole village to raise a child’, to underline his
commitment to partnership working.
Group Chief Executive at New Charter, Ian Munro
said: “We have secured an outstanding individual to
help drive forward our mission to improve the life
chances of young people in the Ashton area. The New
Charter Academy is another example of our commitment
to being iN business for neighbourhoods and changing
the image of housing associations for the better.”
Mr Lloyd will take up his post in June 2007.
