A brand new school – the New Charter Academy – is proposed for Ashton-under-Lyne. It will open in September 2008, replacing Hartshead Sports College and Stamford High School.

The Academy will open using the two existing school buildings. New buildings for the Academy will be constructed on land to the north of Broadoak Community Centre in Ashton-under-Lyne. The New Charter Academy will be co-located with a new Samuel Laycock Special School.

New Charter announced its sponsorship of the 11-19 1650-place Academy (a sixth form of 300) in November 2005. It believes Ashton-under-Lyne should have an outstanding school which will increase opportunities and achievement levels for all young people. New Charter is putting £2million into the new school which has been the catalyst for a £164m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme across Tameside in Greater Manchester.
